EMDR Therapy EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a scientifically recognized psychotherapeutic method for processing stressful experiences, especially trauma.
It was developed in the late 1980s by the American psychologist Francine Shapiro and is now used successfully worldwide. At the heart of EMDR therapy is bilateral stimulation – usually through eye movements, sometimes through alternating tactile stimuli (e.g., tapping the hands). While the affected person concentrates on a stressful experience, these rhythmic stimuli are applied. This supports the brain in processing traumatic or blocked memories, similar to what happens during REM sleep. The stressful images, feelings, and physical reactions diminish in intensity. At the same time, new, helpful thoughts and emotions are strengthened. Many people report noticeable relief, increased clarity, and inner peace after a few sessions.
EMDR is particularly effective for:
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Shock trauma (e.g., after accidents, experiences of violence, sudden loss) Complex trauma (e.g., childhood trauma, chronic stress)
Anxieties and phobias
Panic disorders
Depression, Burnout and exhaustion symptoms
Grief and experiences of loss
Psychosomatic complaints, like Tinnitus, chronic pain
Issues regarding the self-esteem.
EMDR may only be used by appropriately trained professionals. In Switzerland, the prerequisite is a completed basic therapeutic training, e.g., for psychological psychotherapists and psychiatrists. Certified further training in EMDR is also required – usually through an EMDR specialist institute with supervision and practical components. EMDR is an effective, well-researched method for treating emotional distress. It can release deep-seated memories and promote inner healing – gently, structured, and individually tailored. Anyone suffering from persistent stress should consult a qualified professional to determine whether EMDR can be a suitable support.
