Panic disorder

A panic disorder is an anxiety disorder in which affected individuals experience unexpected panic attacks repeatedly. These are accompanied by intense physical symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, dizziness, or chest pain, which are often perceived as life-threatening. Many develop avoidance behavior out of fear of further attacks, which can severely limit their quality of life. The most effective treatment is usually psychotherapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). In this therapy, individuals learn to correctly interpret their physical symptoms, question anxiety-inducing thoughts, and gradually expose themselves to the feared situations. Additionally, relaxation techniques and mindfulness exercises can be employed. The aim is to break the vicious cycle of fear, avoidance, and loss of control, enabling individuals to live their daily lives more freely. Panic disorders can occur in very different life situations in principle. They often manifest during periods of particular stress or change, for example, during family stress (separation, loss), ongoing stress, or in transitional phases of life (parenthood, retirement).
